Nobody sat down and planned Paly Hollywood as a fashion brand. It began in the pandemic, when James Franco was at home drawing and Kyle Lindgren looked at those drawings and thought, could these go on clothes? So they tried. The first pieces went to friends. Friends asked for more, other people started asking too, and somewhere along the way it turned into an actual label. James is the one who’s deep into old Hollywood and film history, and he hasn’t stopped drawing since. Kyle comes from vintage Paly Clothing, garment construction and skate culture, so he thinks about how a piece will look once it’s been worn to death and builds toward that. Put the two together and you get clothes that feel more like objects than merch. Colors are faded on purpose, details get finished by hand, and the artwork nearly always has a story behind it. Ask us, we’ll tell you. Production stays small. Hand-worked pieces take time, and we’re fine with that.
Picture an ordinary week of getting dressed. A graphic tee with the jeans you already own. A sweatshirt when you’re running out the door. A jacket on the days you want the outfit to say a bit more. Hats ended up as a big part of Paly, and that wasn’t the plan. Kyle used to sun-fade hats outside his apartment, and one of our early designs came out of that habit. So a Paly Hollywood Hat isn’t just an item on an accessory rack. It holds one of the brand’s recognizable ideas in something small. It also finishes an outfit without adding another layer, which is handy. Wear it with a tee and pants, over a hoodie, or with shorts in summer.
We don’t think clothes have to look brand new. Faded fabric, imperfect marks, painted details, old photographs, handwritten artwork, distressed finishes: that’s how we talk visually. Slightly worn-in often looks better than perfect. Kyle’s love of vintage garments pushes him to recreate the feel of old clothing, and James keeps drawing, with those drawings going into our design archive. A lot of our references go after forgotten people, odd moments and old places in the city’s history, instead of taking Hollywood at face value.
You don’t have to understand every reference before you wear something. Like the graphic, the fit, the color, or just how it feels? That’s good enough. Start with what you know you’ll wear.
